World Class Mountain Bike Trails by Robertson

1713339930295

Our Major Project Framework 2 (MPF2) partner Robertson has delivered new mountain bike trails, upgraded infrastructure, and exceptional visitor facilities, all seamlessly integrated into the surrounding landscape.

Their civil engineering expertise has transformed Glentress Forest in the Scottish Borders into a championship ready venue for the UCI Cycling World Championships in August 2023.

Glentress Forest is a popular destination with 300,000 annual visitors, and needed enhancements to host the prestigious UCI MTB events.

The project required upgrades to create competition worthy trails for elite mountain bikers, improve onsite infrastructure and a welcoming destination for spectators to enhance the visitor experience.

Highlights

  • Enhanced Mountain Bike Trails: Designed and built 9.5km of new trails, including a 3km "taster trail" and an additional 4.5km for the XC and Marathon events.

  • Improved Infrastructure: Constructed new car parking facilities with a barrier and payment system to manage increased visitor traffic.

  • Sustainable Design: Created three "feature bridges" using a vegetated wall system that minimised environmental impact and offered a 120-year lifespan. This method reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 97% compared to traditional concrete.

  • Accessibility Improvements: Established 2km of multi use paths to connect the new trails to the existing network, enhancing accessibility for all visitors.

Benefits

  • Upgraded Facilities: Showcasing Scotland's mountain biking scene on a global stage. The project transformed Glentress Forest into a world class venue, attracting international sporting events and boosting visitor numbers.

  • Sustainable Practices: The use of innovative, eco-friendly construction methods minimised disruption to the natural environment.

  • Improved Visitor Experience: Enhanced infrastructure and accessible trails provide a more enjoyable experience for all visitors.
