A Day in the Life of a Property Surveyor with Ridge: How Framework Delivery Supports Safer Homes
As part of my role as Supplier Relationship Manager at Procurement Hub, I’ve been spending time out with our framework partners to see firsthand how their expertise strengthens the services our members rely on. One of those partners is Ridge and Partners, who deliver Asset Management and Stock Condition Survey services through a number of our Dynamic Purchasing Systems as well as our Strategic Asset Management Services (SAMS) framework.
To understand the real difference these services make on the ground, I spent a day shadowing Adam, a Property Surveyor at Ridge, to experience what “a day in the life” truly looks like.
Getting Started: The Purpose Behind the Surveys
Before we visited our first property, Adam explained the core purpose of stock condition surveys:
Ensuring homes are safe
Identifying health and safety risks
Logging electrical checks, fire safety compliance, damp and mould issues
Assessing building fabric and component lifecycles
These surveys are not just data collection exercises. They are the foundation for better asset planning, future investment decisions, and ensuring residents live in homes that are safe, well maintained, and compliant.
Ridge’s work, delivered through Procurement Hub frameworks, gives landlords structured, reliable insight that ultimately benefits the tenants they serve.
On the Ground: What the Day Looked Like
Walking into the first property, clipboard and iPad at the ready, we got straight into inspecting:
Windows and glazing
Fire alarms and smoke detectors
Electrical points
Flooring and joinery
Kitchens and bathrooms
Loft insulation
External fabric and common areas
Every issue, even the smallest concern, had to be photographed, recorded, and categorised by urgency. I quickly realised that this role is equal parts technical knowledge, investigative instinct, and people skills.
And that’s where Adam really shone.
The Human Side of Surveying
This work takes place inside people’s homes, their safe spaces. Some tenants were welcoming, some cautious, some simply not home. Adam approached every interaction with professionalism, warmth, and clarity, explaining:
Why the survey was happening
What he would be looking at
How long it would take
How any issues would be followed up
It was clear these weren’t just “tick‑box surveys.” Each visit was about ensuring homes were genuinely safe and fit for purpose, with tenants feeling supported rather than disrupted.
Why This Matters for Procurement Hub Members
Through the SAMS framework, members can access experienced, reliable specialists like Ridge who:
Provide consistent, high quality stock condition data
Identify risks early
Strengthen asset management strategies
Support compliance and long term investment planning
Seeing this work in person reinforced just how fundamental these services are, and how much value partners like Ridge deliver behind the scenes.
By the end of the day, we had met a variety of residents, carried out a significant number of surveys, and gained invaluable insight into the care, detail, and expertise Ridge brings to every visit.
A huge thank you to Adam and the Ridge team for letting me into their world for the day, and for the meaningful work they deliver for Procurement Hub members every single day.
